In the world of numerology this is year number 5. (2+0+2+1 =5). The Major Arcana number 5 is represented by The Hierophant. The Hierophant is the fifth card in the Major Arcana. According to dictionary.com, the word Hierophant (in ancient Greece) meant “an official expounder of rites worship and sacrifice; and “any interpreter of sacred mysteries or esoteric principles.” Often pictured is a priest blessing his clergy, this card was traditionally called Papas or the Pope. At the time tarot was invented the Pope had control over a large area of Italy, so along with the religious or spiritual connotations, the meaning extended into politics and the military. Another name for this card is the High Priest who is the counterpart to the High Priestess. The number 5 is about change and instability, ideas, excitement, and freedom. I believe we all learned a huge lesson in 2020 in that we can’t control everything in our lives, and more importantly, we adapt to change better than we’d imagine. 2021 continues that vibe, so expect the unexpected, be flexible and embrace changes that ultimately let us learn and grow as people.

What does the Hierophant mean for us in the year 2021?

With the jolt and halt of living as we knew it in 2020, the unrest in societies, all governments battling the COVID-19 pandemic, some traditions as we knew them stopped. We couldn’t visit families, meet customers, interact as usual at school, or even go to school, hold large social gatherings, and more besides. Last year gave us a ‘heads up’ as to how to adapt. 2021 continues to change and be a little uncertain BUT we have been there, seen and done it, and going to buy the T-Shirt.

This is going to be an interesting year where the Hierophant is caught up in the Age of Aquarius. Being associated with the fixed sign of Taurus (the stubborn bull – we all know a couple of those people 😉 ), the Hierophant likes traditions, to follow and obey the rules. Instead of telling us what to do, like the Emperor, the Hierophant is more of a trusted aunt or uncle, a being who is there to advise, by offering spiritual counseling along with being a huge advocate of personal development. He is the conduit between the Higher Power and the Human Race, determining social rights and wrongs no matter your religious or cultural status.

The Age of Aquarius is about freedoms and bucking the system. It is about challenging the old ways and traditions to make ways that are better for now and the future. That goes across all systems – government, religious beliefs, environmental issues, holistic health, new medicine, freedom of expression, acceptance of the unconventional, a few things we began to experience over recent years.

The common denominator between the two is the spiritual side of life. I feel more people will be exploring their spiritual path this year whether turning back towards religion or exploring other metaphysical realms to gain a better understanding of their life’s purpose. To sum it up expect some shaking up of traditional institutions to make way for more futuristic ones. Open yourself up to discover spiritual paths and take a walk along some, you never know what you will encounter. Enjoy the surprises and unconventional ways of looking at things, embrace change, and go with the flow.
